Cally Taylor was born in Worcester and spent her early years living in various army camps in the UK and Germany. She studied Psychology at the University of Northumbria and went on forge a career in instructional design and e-Learning before leaving to write full time in 2014.
She started writing short stories in 2005 and was published widely in literary and women’s magazines. She also won several short story competitions. In 2009 and 2011 her romantic comedy novels (as Cally Taylor) were published by Orion and translated into fourteen languages. HEAVEN CAN WAIT was a bestseller in Hungary and China and HOME FOR CHRISTMAS was made into a feature film by JumpStart Productions. Whilst on maternity leave with her son Cally had an idea for a psychological thriller and turned to crime.

i agree your characters are easy to identify with.for me I like the way you make the female characters the heroin (.I think if the main character was male the books would not have appeal) I route for her in all your books I love the cliff hangers you put in the end of chapters keeps me turning the pagers. the accident was my first book I ever read it was very hard to put down. the only downside to your books the stories have to come to a end. I like your books so much I have to buy two copies of every book you bring out one for me to keep and the other I have to lend out please keep up the great work

I’ve never written to an author before but I was very moved by The Missing and liked that you ended it with your personal note and reasons for writing so thought I’d look at your website.
Apart from being gripped by the story it spoke to me as I had bad times bringing up two teenage sons without fathers – and the continuing problems that gives right into adulthood. So it was great to read about a two parent family that was more dysfunctional than mine!! Made me feel better – and the jealousies and secrets were all so believable. Thank God I didn’t have the internet porn and social media to deal with – mine are in their thirties now.

I have just finished reading The Missing and was often annoyed by it but just could not put it down. It seemed familiar in style, and then I realised that you had also written The Lie which I read about four months ago. Same again, irritated but compelled to read it. At the tender age of seventy I have taken up writing myself and have just self-published my first book on Amazon and am about a third of the way into my second. I never realised how fulfilling writing could be. Both of my books are bigger stories but lack your depth of characterisation. My characters move forward throughout the book, whereas yours, especially the main character, repeats the same emotions, actions and thought processes – which in real life is what we actually do. It is something I really need to work on and aim at a simple, more everyday situation and concentrate on interrelationships. But I rather think that might be difficult. Cormack McCarthy does it really well. And so do you. A pleasure (if that Is the right word) reading your work and I will order the next when it arrives.

When I started writing I struggled with characterisation too. It’s very easy to create two dimensional characters who support the plot but don’t have any depth to them. These days I spend a lot of time thinking about my character’s back story – their past, why they are the way they are today, their fears, their dreams etc. If you pick up my next book, The Escape, I hope you find it as compelling as the two you’ve read (but less irritating!). WOW!!!! Another excellently written thriller. Your book, THE LIE, has drawn me into a new genre of books – psychological thriller; I can’t get enough of it.
After reading The Lie, I bought The Accident and The Missing; now I have Book 4 to complete the collection. (Although at the moment book 1, 2 and 3 are out in circulation around my friends who’re enjoying them as much as I had).
I have a 13yrs old daugther, I would like to know if your upcoming book THE TREATMENT would be suitable for her; as she’s struggling to find a book that grip her attention at the moment. I recently read The Accident and loved it. I’ve just finished The Missing and it was so real because I live in Knowle, shop in Broadwalk and drink at Charlies Bar! Perfect description of the area. It isn’t easy for me to want to read any book non stop but i have read ‘The Lie’, ‘The Accident’. ‘The Missing’ and have just finished reading ‘The Escape’. I didn’t have a favourite author until now. I find your books gripping and never can guess where the story is leading. Amazing. I write short stories and poems for a group every Thursday. Could you tell me (apart from personal experiences) where you get your ideas from and how could i aspire to write my own stories which would make people reluctant to put down the book.

Your question isn’t really one that I can answer briefly (I sometimes teach a workshop on how to write novels readers can’t put down) but I live by the Elmore Leonard quote ‘cut the parts that readers skip’. Keep description light, ensure every scene moves the action forward, make sure there’s lots of conflict, reveal new secrets and mysteries as the novel progresses, end chapters with cliffhangers. And my ideas? The Escape and the book I am writing now were inspired by news stories. All the best with your writing, Cally.

I had the same problem as one of your other fans and could not access the lodger despite signing up. Also currently reading your latest novel the fear which I am only half way through but I am gripped and loving the alternative chapters between characters. Just wanted to point out a mistake I found while reading on chapter. 21 Chloe,at the beginning of the chapter fourth line down it says
When her he dad dropped her off before school he told her wouldn’t be able to pick her up. The first HE should not be there and instead should of been put before wouldn’t.
Don’t know if I am the only one with this mistake or whether all the books are the same but I kept reading the line over and over thinking this does not make sense.
Have read all your books and have loved every single one, looking forward to your next book.

As a huge fan of all your books,like many readers I can’t get through them quick enough as they are so good,I even read the treatment despite being aimed at young adults and I’m 37,anything with your name attached is a must read so keep up the good work and it’s also great to know you live in the same town as myself! You don’t say where you’re based but the books I’ve had published in the UK are The Accident, The Lie, The Missing, The Escape and The Fear. I’ve also had a young adult thriller published called The Treatment. I’m not sure if you’re aware but Before I Wake is actually the US title for The Accident. It’s the same book. In the U.S. the books that have been published so far are Before I Wake, The Lie and The Missing. Thanks again for getting in touch, Cally.
Thank you so much for your response. I am based in the US. I will have to get The Treatment. I try my best to keep up on your latest books but for the most part when I ordered them ( standard shipping) It takes a month to received them from the UK. Again thank you so much for getting me back into reading. Hopefully one day I will get an autograph copy of one of your books.
